We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate dog behaviourist to join our growing team. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of dogs and their people across Sydney.

Job Overview:

As a Dog Behaviourist in Sydney, you will be responsible for providing expert assessment, diagnosis, and treatment plans for dogs exhibiting a wide spectrum of behavioural issues. This includes, but is not limited to, aggression (inter-dog, dog-human), anxiety (separation, noise, general), fear-based behaviours, destructive chewing, excessive barking, house training difficulties, and leash reactivity. Your role will involve direct interaction with dogs in various settings – in-home consultations, group classes, and potentially in a dedicated training facility. A significant aspect of the job involves educating and empowering owners with the knowledge and tools to manage and modify their dog's behaviour effectively long-term.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conducting thorough behavioural assessments of dogs, utilizing a variety of assessment tools and techniques. This involves detailed history taking from owners, observation of the dog in various situations, and potentially using standardized behavioural tests.

• Developing and implementing individualized behaviour modification plans based on the assessment findings. These plans must be tailored to the specific needs of each dog and owner, considering their lifestyle, resources, and commitment level.

• Providing in-home consultations, offering practical advice and hands-on training to owners.

• Delivering group training classes focusing on various aspects of dog behaviour and obedience.

• Maintaining clear and comprehensive records of client interactions, assessment findings, and treatment progress.

• Providing ongoing support and guidance to clients, addressing any questions or concerns that arise during the behaviour modification process.

• Staying abreast of the latest research and advancements in canine behaviour science through continuing education and professional development. This includes attending relevant conferences and workshops, and actively engaging with professional organizations.

• Marketing and promoting services through various channels (potentially including social media, website updates, community events).

• Maintaining professional relationships with veterinary professionals and other relevant animal welfare organizations within the Sydney area.

• Adhering to high ethical standards and ensuring the welfare of all dogs under your care.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

• A relevant tertiary qualification in animal behaviour, canine behaviour, or a closely related field (e.g., animal science, veterinary technology with a focus on behaviour). Certification from a reputable professional organization (e.g., Certified Professional Dog Trainer – CPDT-KA, Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner – KPA-CTP) is highly desirable.

• Proven experience (minimum 3 years) working as a dog behaviourist or in a related role. Demonstrable success in modifying canine behavioural problems is essential.

• A comprehensive understanding of canine behaviour, learning theory, and behaviour modification techniques (e.g., positive reinforcement, classical and operant conditioning).

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with both dogs and their owners. This includes the ability to explain complex information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to assess situations effectively and develop tailored solutions.

• Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple clients and appointments efficiently.

• A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are essential for in-home consultations.

• Current first aid and CPR certification is preferred.

• A genuine passion for canine welfare and a commitment to ethical and humane treatment of dogs.

• Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Experience working with a variety of dog breeds and sizes.

• Knowledge of canine first aid and emergency procedures.

• Experience in running or assisting with group dog training classes.

• Experience with specific behaviour modification techniques such as counter-conditioning, desensitization, and flooding (used responsibly and ethically).

• Bilingual capabilities (particularly in Mandarin or Cantonese).
