Dog Care in the Fall and Winter111

As the days get shorter and the temperatures begin to drop, it's important to take extra care of your furry friend to keep them comfortable and healthy during the fall and winter months.

1. Provide Warmth and Shelter

Dogs can get cold just like humans, so it's important to make sure they have a warm place to sleep and a way to stay warm when they're outside.

Inside the house, make sure your dog has a bed with a soft blanket or a heated bed to curl up in. If you have hardwood or tile floors, consider placing rugs around the house to help insulate your dog's feet.

If your dog spends any time outside, make sure they have a warm shelter, such as a dog house or a heated kennel. The shelter should be big enough for your dog to stand up and turn around in, but not so big that it can't retain heat.

2. Protect Paws from Cold and Ice

Dogs' paws are sensitive to cold and can easily get chapped or cracked during the winter months. To protect your dog's paws, apply a paw balm or petroleum jelly to the pads before going outside.

If you live in an area with snow and ice, consider getting your dog boots to wear. Boots will help to protect their paws from the cold and the ice-melting chemicals that can be harmful to their skin.

3. Adjust Exercise Routine

The amount of exercise your dog needs will vary depending on their age, breed, and activity level. However, in general, dogs need less exercise during the winter months than they do during the summer months.

If you live in a cold climate, it's important to limit your dog's time outside on days when the temperature is below freezing. When you do take your dog outside, keep walks short and avoid strenuous activity.

4. Keep Your Dog Hydrated

Dogs can easily get dehydrated during the winter months, especially if they're not drinking enough water. Make sure your dog has access to fresh water at all times, even if they're not showing signs of thirst.

If your dog is reluctant to drink water, you can try adding a little bit of low-sodium chicken broth to their water bowl.
