Essential Pre-Summer Travel Precautions for Dog Owners381
Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, and many people enjoy taking their dogs on vacation with them. However, there are some important considerations to keep in mind when traveling with your furry friend during the summer months.
Hydration
One of the most important things to keep in mind when traveling with your dog in the summer is to make sure they have plenty of water. Dogs can easily become dehydrated, especially in hot weather. Make sure to bring a portable water bowl for your dog and stop often to give them water breaks.
Heatstroke
Heatstroke is a serious medical condition that can occur when a dog's body temperature rises too high. Signs of heatstroke include panting, drooling, weakness, and vomiting. If you think your dog is experiencing heatstroke, take them to a cool place and apply cool water to their body. You should also call your veterinarian immediately.
Sunburn
Dogs can also get sunburned, especially if they have light-colored skin or fur. Apply sunscreen to your dog's exposed skin, especially their ears and nose.
Insects
Insects can be a nuisance to dogs, and some insects, such as ticks and mosquitoes, can carry diseases. Use a flea and tick prevention product on your dog and avoid areas where there are a lot of insects.
Car Travel
If you are traveling with your dog in the car, make sure to take precautions to keep them safe. Never leave your dog unattended in a car, even for a short period of time. The temperature inside a car can rise quickly, even on a mild day.
If you must leave your dog in the car, park in a shaded area and open the windows slightly to allow for ventilation.
