Decluttering My Dog‘s Treat Stash: A Review of Unused and Lightly Used Canine Delights322
As a devoted dog lover, my home often resembles a canine candy store. My furry companion, a boisterous Labrador named Gus, enjoys a rotating selection of treats, carefully chosen to maintain his dental health, support his energy levels, and, of course, to keep him happy. However, with Gus's insatiable appetite and my tendency to overbuy during sales, I've accumulated a surplus of dog treats – a veritable doggy pantry overflowing with unused and lightly used goodies. So, I decided to declutter and share my honest review of these canine culinary treasures, complete with photos (see below)! Consider this a secondhand dog treat emporium, offering a peek into Gus's – and my – discerning tastes.
(Image 1: A partially opened bag of "Pup-Peroni" mini-treats. About half the bag remains.) These are an old faithful. Pup-Peroni mini-treats are a classic for a reason. They're incredibly convenient for training, small enough for even Gus’s petite puppy-sized mouth (back in the day!), and have a strong, savory aroma that gets his tail wagging. However, with his increased size, I’ve found these too small to be truly satisfying as a reward for longer training sessions. They’re great for quick training reinforcement, though. Conditioning level: A+. Satisfaction level: B (due to size now being less ideal).
(Image 2: A nearly full bag of "Greenies" dental chews for large breeds.) Greenies are a staple in my house, and these are the large breed variety, perfect for Gus's powerful jaws. They're supposed to help with plaque and tartar buildup, and while I can’t say for certain they’ve magically solved all dental issues (regular vet checkups are key!), Gus seems to enjoy them, and his teeth do seem relatively clean. The only reason I'm letting these go is that we’re currently experimenting with a different dental chew (more on that below). Conditioning level: A-. Satisfaction level: A-
(Image 3: A single, unopened box of "Zuke's Mini Naturals" – Chicken Recipe.) I got suckered in by the "natural" aspect and the attractive packaging. I’m always on the lookout for healthy alternatives. Truthfully, Gus hasn't even tried these yet. I bought them with good intentions, but they’ve been sitting in my pantry untouched. It's purely a matter of Gus having a rotation of treats he prefers. Conditioning level: N/A. Satisfaction level: N/A (untried).
(Image 4: A partially consumed bag of "Wellness Soft Puppy Bites" – Chicken and Sweet Potato.) These were initially meant for Gus when he was a much smaller pup. The soft texture made them perfect for his developing teeth. Now they're a bit too small and soft for him, but I’m reluctant to throw them out entirely since they’re still a perfectly good treat – perhaps for a smaller dog in need? Condition level: B. Satisfaction level: B+ (for his younger self).
(Image 5: A nearly full jar of "Himalayan Dog Chews." ) These are a bit of a splurge item, but I was hoping for a long-lasting, natural chew that would keep Gus occupied. They're incredibly tough, even for his powerful jaw, and last a remarkably long time. However, he seems to prefer the variety, and I have to admit, I've found them a bit less convenient to manage than some of the smaller treats. Conditioning level: A. Satisfaction level: B (due to cost and less frequent use).
(Image 6: An almost empty bag of freeze-dried liver treats.) These are Gus’s absolute favorite. The intense liver flavor is a serious hit with him, and they're perfect as high-value rewards during training. The problem is, they’re incredibly stinky! The aroma permeates everything, and I have to store them in an airtight container. Despite this, they're too effective to completely give up on. I'll just be more mindful of my purchasing habits in the future. Conditioning level: S+. Satisfaction level: A+ (despite the odor).
(Image 7: A new, unopened bag of "BarkBox" assorted treats.) I subscribe to BarkBox periodically for Gus, and this bag was from a recent shipment. I've included it here because Gus is incredibly picky, and he often leaves several treats untouched. While they're high-quality and interesting, it’s a bit of a gamble with each box, and sometimes, the contents simply don’t suit his refined palate. Condition level: A. Satisfaction level: Variable (depends on the contents of the box).
(Image 8: A bag of "Benebones" durable chew toys.) These aren't technically treats, but rather chew toys, yet they occupy a similar space in our dog-treat ecosystem. These are incredibly long-lasting, and Gus absolutely loves them. However, they're also pricey, and I haven't gotten around to buying more because the current ones are still going strong. I'm including them here because they’re part of the overall 'decluttering' process. Condition: B (showing some wear but still highly functional). Satisfaction: A+
This inventory highlights my struggle as a responsible dog owner – trying to find the right balance between providing a variety of healthy and engaging treats and avoiding unnecessary waste. It's a constant learning process, and I'm always trying to find the sweet spot for Gus's happiness and my budget. If you have a dog with similar tastes, or if you're curious to try some of these treats, feel free to reach out! I'd be happy to share my surplus to give these lovely doggy delights a good home. Let's help Gus (and other pups!) enjoy these treats!
