Homemade Dog Treats: Sweet Pepper & Peanut Butter Delights (with Pictures!)392
As a lifelong dog lover, I’m always on the hunt for healthy and delicious treats to spoil my furry companions. While store-bought options are readily available, nothing beats the satisfaction of making homemade goodies, knowing exactly what ingredients are going into them. Today, I'm excited to share a recipe for sweet pepper and peanut butter dog treats – a surprisingly delightful combination that's both nutritious and appealing to canine palates. (And yes, I'll include pictures!)
The inspiration for this recipe came from my own dog, a mischievous beagle named Pip. Pip is notoriously picky, and finding treats he actually enjoys can be a challenge. He’s always been drawn to the sweet, slightly tangy aroma of bell peppers, so I decided to experiment. The result? A resounding success! He devoured the first batch in record time, leaving me with a wagging tail and a warm, fuzzy feeling.
This recipe is remarkably simple, requiring only a handful of ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your kitchen. It’s also incredibly versatile. Feel free to adjust the quantities to suit your dog's size and dietary needs. For smaller dogs, you can use cookie cutters to create smaller, bite-sized treats. For larger breeds, you can make larger biscuits or even adjust the baking time to achieve a different texture.

Ingredients:
1 cup whole wheat flour (or oat flour for gluten-free option)
½ cup rolled oats
½ cup smooth peanut butter (xylitol-free – xylitol is toxic to dogs!)
¼ cup unsweetened applesauce
½ cup finely chopped sweet bell pepper (red or yellow are best – avoid green peppers as they can cause digestive upset)
1 egg (lightly beaten)
1 tablespoon olive oil
Water (as needed)
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and chopped sweet pepper. Mix well.
Add the peanut butter, applesauce, egg, and olive oil to the bowl. Mix thoroughly until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time until it comes together. If it's too wet, add a little more flour.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few minutes until smooth and elastic.
Roll out the dough to about ¼ inch thickness. Use cookie cutters (if desired) or a knife to cut the dough into small, bite-sized treats.

Place the treats onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each one.
Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning.
Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the treats cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your furry friend.

Storage: Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze them for longer storage. Freezing helps preserve their freshness and flavor.
Important Note: Always supervise your dog when giving them treats, especially new ones. While this recipe is designed to be healthy and safe, individual dogs may have different sensitivities. Start with a small amount to observe for any adverse reactions. If your dog shows any signs of digestive upset, discontinue use and consult your veterinarian.
I hope you and your canine companion enjoy these sweet pepper and peanut butter treats as much as Pip and I do. Making homemade dog treats is a rewarding experience, and it’s a wonderful way to show your furry friend how much you care. Happy baking!
